The Jason Islands are a small group off the northwest coast of West Falkland, and by 1978 they were effectively the private domain of Len Hill, a British bird-keeper who purchased them in 1971 primarily to protect the resident black-browed albatross and Jackass penguin colonies. Hill was granted administrator status, which gave him the unusual legal standing to issue this note — one of the more eccentric wildlife-themed issues to emerge from the South Atlantic in that decade.
These notes were never legal tender in any conventional sense and circulated mainly as collector novelties, funding conservation efforts on the islands rather than facilitating commerce.
