| Reverse description | The reverse presents a dynamic artistic composition depicting multiple hands and feet arranged in a circular, interlocking pattern around a centrally placed Olympic rings emblem, evoking themes of athletic movement, unity, and competition. The design, executed in high relief, suggests the intertwined effort and cooperation of athletes from diverse nations. The denomination £1 is inscribed in bold serif characters at the top of the field above the Olympic rings. The field is otherwise unlettered, allowing the sculptural figural design to dominate. |

Cyprus issued this coin as part of its Olympic commemorative program ahead of the Barcelona Games, a series the Central Bank had been producing since the 1976 Montreal cycle. The Barcelona issue marks one of the last in that copper-nickel format before Cyprus shifted toward silver and bimetallic commemoratives in subsequent years.
