Guatemala rarely issued commemorative silver, making this 2007 piece an outlier in the modern series. It was struck in connection with Guatemala's Olympic program at a time when the country's athletic federation was pushing for broader international recognition — a goal that had frustrated Guatemalan officials since the IOC suspended the country's committee in 2004 over government interference, a ban not fully resolved until 2006.
