| Obverse description | Central crowned quartered shield bearing the castles of Castile and lions of León in alternating quarters, with a pomegranate at the base, all within a beaded inner circle. Gothic letter M mint marks flank the shield to either side, serving as the Mexico City mint identifier. A royal crown surmounts the shield, rendered in the archaic Gothic style characteristic of early colonial Mexican coinage. The surrounding field is bordered by a beaded outer rim. The overall design reflects the crude but bold hammered workmanship of the first issues struck at the Mexico City mint. |
