| Obverse description | Central device displays the quartered royal arms of Castile and León within an oval shield: castles in the first and fourth quarters, rampant lions in the second and third quarters. The mintmark 'M' appears to the left of the shield and the assayer's mark 'A' to the right. The circumferential legend, partially visible on this irregularly struck hammered flan, reads CAROLVS ET IOHANA REGES, identifying the joint monarchs Carlos I and Juana. The overall style is characteristic of early colonial Mexican cob coinage, with bold but unevenly struck relief typical of the macuquina technique. |
