Obverse description Draped bust of King Carlos IV facing right, wearing a laurel wreath and armor with a ruffled collar, rendered in the standard Spanish colonial portrait style. The effigy occupies the central field with fine detail in the hair and drapery. The circular legend reads CAROLUS • IV • DEI • GRATIA • around the upper periphery, with the date • 1789 • positioned in the lower exergual area between two dots. The entire design is bordered by a continuous milled inner ring.

Reverse description The quartered arms of Castile and León displayed on a crowned shield, flanked on either side by the Pillars of Hercules, each entwined with a banner, representing the traditional Spanish colonial coat of arms. A royal crown surmounts the shield at the top of the field. The circular legend HISPAN • ET IND • REX • reads around the upper periphery, while the mint mark NG, denomination 1R, and assayer initial M appear in the lower left field. The design is bordered by a continuous milled inner ring.
