| Obverse description | Central crowned quartered shield of Castile and León, displaying alternating castles and rampant lions in the four quarters. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown and encircled by a beaded inner border. The peripheral legend, interrupted by cross and club or acorn ornamental stops, reads CAROLVS ET IHOANA REG, identifying the joint monarchs Charles I and Joanna of Castile. The die-struck design is characteristic of early colonial hammered coinage, with bold though irregular relief typical of the period. |
