Obverse description Crowned Royal coat of arms of Castile and León centered in the field, flanked on the left by a star above the Roman numeral I (denomination mark for 1 Real), and on the right by the mint mark P (Lima, Peru) above the assayer initial D (Diego de la Torre). The shield displays the quartered arms of Castile (castle) and León (lion) in the characteristic style of the colonial cob coinage. The partial encircling legend reads PHILIPPVS D G HISPANIARV, identifying the issuing monarch Philip II of Spain.

Reverse description Bold Greek cross with splayed arms dividing the field into four quarters, each containing alternating castles (Castile) and rampant lions (León) in diagonal arrangement. The entire cross design is contained within a decorative quatrefoil or octolobe border, a hallmark feature of the Spanish colonial macuquina (cob) coinage of this period. The partial peripheral legend ET INDIARVM REX, completing the obverse inscription, identifies Philip II as King of the Indies. The irregular flan shape and characteristic die alignment are typical of hand-struck cob coinage produced at the Lima mint in the third quarter of the sixteenth century.
