Reverse description A bold Greek cross with decorated terminals divides the field into four quadrants, with the upper two quadrants each containing a rampant lion passant and the lower two quadrants each displaying a turreted castle, following the standard heraldic arrangement of the Castile-León arms on colonial cob coinage. A partial circular legend in Latin surrounds the cross, partially visible along the periphery of the irregularly shaped flan. The design is characteristic of the macuquina series struck at the Mexico City mint under Felipe IV, with the inherent weakness and incompleteness of strike typical of hand-produced cob coinage.
