| Obverse description | Quartered royal shield of Castile and León at centre, displaying alternating castles and rampant lions in the four quadrants, all within a plain bordure. A dotted inner circle frames the shield, with partial Latin legend visible around the periphery. The cob format results in an irregular flan with portions of the legend characteristically off-flan. The die work reflects the macuquer (cob) striking technique standard to the Santa Fe de Bogotá mint in the mid-seventeenth century. |
