The Buchenwald camp scrip system was not designed for prisoners. The SS-Standort-Kantine notes were issued for use by SS personnel stationed at the camp — the canteen currency that allowed garrison troops to make purchases within the facility without handling Reichsmark cash directly. Prisoners operated under an entirely separate and far more restricted system of Prämienscheine, introduced later under pressure from the Reich Economics Ministry.
Campbell 3948 is among the more documented examples of wartime German garrison scrip, though survival rates are low. Most were destroyed or discarded after the camp's liberation in April 1945.
