South Ossetia declared independence from Georgia in 2008 following the brief but destructive August war, with Russia recognizing the breakaway republic within days. Almost no other UN member states followed. The anniversary rouble series was struck not by any South Ossetian mint — the territory has none — but by private or contract facilities, and these pieces circulate more as political artifacts than functional currency in a region that largely uses the Russian ruble in daily transactions.
