The Ceylon Ice & Cold Storage Co. Ltd. was established to serve Colombo's colonial commercial class and the substantial British military and naval presence on the island. Store notes of this kind — issued by private companies rather than any monetary authority — functioned as internal scrip, redeemable only at the issuing establishment's own premises at Ragama, a rail junction town north of Colombo on the main line to Kandy.
Private scrip from Ceylon at this date is genuinely rare in any condition; most circulated hard within a closed workforce economy and were never intended to survive.
