Obverse description Gilt oval field with a fine horizontal line-engraved background. Two rectangular cartouches in relief are placed vertically in the center: the upper one bears grass-script characters reading 壱両, the lower one contains the cursive signature (hanshita) of a mint official. Two fan-shaped floral stamps appear at the top and bottom, and two circular paulownia or chrysanthemum roundels flank the central cartouches on either side.
