| Obverse description | Central field features the crowned royal cypher of Johan III, consisting of the interlaced initials 'IH' beneath a large heraldic crown surmounted by a cross, all enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The cypher is rendered in bold Gothic style characteristic of late 16th-century Baltic coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the inner circle, reading the king's name and title. The flan is irregular in shape, as typical of hammered billon schillings of this period. |

Reval — present-day Tallinn — operated under Swedish suzerainty from 1561 following the collapse of the Livonian Confederation, yet the city retained its municipal minting rights through the reign of Johan III, issuing small billon schillings under its own civic authority rather than royal dies. This arrangement reflected the extensive privileges Reval had negotiated upon submission to Sweden, including the right to coin money.
The "Type 1, with circle" designation distinguishes this issue from concurrent variants by die detail — the enclosing circle element being the cataloger's primary sorting criterion across Haljak and Ahlström's classifications of this complex series.
