Additional information

Tanumafili II held the position of O le Ao o le Malo — Head of State — from Samoan independence in 1962 until his death in 2007, making him one of the longest-serving heads of state in the Pacific. Unlike most constitutional monarchies, his role was life-tenure rather than hereditary; the position became fully elected by the Legislative Assembly after his death. This coin's 22-year production run reflects that unusual political continuity — the same portrait, the same authority, no succession to prompt a redesign.
