Additional information

Lesotho's first decimal coinage series, introduced in 1979, was tied directly to the country's break from the South African rand system following the establishment of the Central Bank of Lesotho in 1978. The loti and its subunits replaced the rand at par, a politically significant act for a nation entirely landlocked within South Africa during the apartheid period. The sente denominations were struck at the Royal Mint in Llantrisant, Wales, through much of the series run.
