Additional information

Somaliland has operated as a self-declared independent republic since 1991, unrecognized by any UN member state, yet it has issued its own currency, passports, and legal code for over three decades. This shilling belongs to a novelty series exploiting that legal ambiguity — coins produced primarily for the collector market rather than domestic circulation, a practice Somaliland's issuing authorities have leaned on heavily since the mid-2010s. Pad printing onto steel blanks is a cost-cutting technique that sidesteps traditional die-engraved coloration entirely.

The boojum tree (Fouquieria columnaris) is native exclusively to Baja California — geographically about as far from Somaliland as a plant can get.
