Obverse description Triangular silver piece cut from one-eighth of a Spanish Colonial 8 Reales coin, bearing a rectangular countermark applied by the authorities of Tortola. The countermark displays the incuse legend TORTOLA in bold capital letters within a recessed rectangular punch, applied across the flat field of the triangular segment. The irregular surface retains vestiges of the original host coin's design beneath and around the countermark. The cutting of the planchet has produced three roughly straight edges meeting at acute angles, consistent with the systematic cutting practice used to create fractional currency in the British Virgin Islands during the early nineteenth century.
