Tolley's Bowl & Bar scrip from Boyd, Wisconsin — a small Chippewa County community that never exceeded a few hundred residents — belongs to a category of Depression-era and mid-century merchant tokens issued to keep spending local and extend informal credit. Boyd had at least one bowling alley operating through the postwar decades, and combination bar-and-lanes operations were common in rural Wisconsin, where the tavern license effectively subsidized the recreational facility.
The "1 Soda" denomination places this firmly in the non-alcoholic scrip category, likely issued to minors or as change in a context where cash was inconvenient.
