Additional information

The Ostrogoths under Theoderic struck gold coinage in the name of the reigning Eastern emperor — Anastasius I in this case — as a deliberate political statement of nominal deference to Constantinople, while simultaneously asserting administrative control over Italy. Theoderic had no legal authority to strike gold independently; that right belonged exclusively to the emperor. Issuing solidi in Anastasius's name was the compromise that kept the arrangement functional.

The reverse legend termination letter is the distinguishing diagnostic for this type within the series, used by specialists to sequence the emissions across Theoderic's reign. Metlich's classification remains the standard reference for sorting these issues.
