Reverse description Central field features the large numeral '1' surmounted by the crown element of the Tajik national emblem, consisting of a stylized crown topped with a rising sun motif. Seven five-pointed stars arc above the crown in the upper register. The entire central design is enclosed within an ornate quatrefoil framework rendered in a traditional Central Asian architectural style. The Cyrillic denomination СОМОНӢ is inscribed below the numeral, and the date 2018 appears at the base within the lower lobe of the quatrefoil.

Additional information

The somoni was introduced in 2000 to replace the Tajik ruble, itself a transitional currency that had replaced Soviet rubles following independence in 1991. The unit is named after Ismoil Somoni, the 9th-century Samanid ruler whose reign is regarded as a high point of Persian cultural and political organization in Central Asia — a deliberate choice by a government seeking pre-Soviet roots for its national identity.
