Obverse description Bare-headed young effigy of Queen Victoria facing left, the hair drawn back in undulating waves and gathered into a coiled bun at the nape, secured by a fillet — the so-called 'Young Head' portrait engraved by William Wyon. The truncation of the neck is plain and unadorned. The date 1853 appears in the lower field beneath the portrait. The encircling Latin legend is interrupted by beaded inner and outer borders, with dot separators between abbreviated words.

Reverse description At the centre of the field, the word AUSTRALIA is displayed beneath a florid royal crown, the whole enclosed within a wreath of laurel branches tied at the base. The legend SYDNEY MINT arcs across the upper field outside the wreath, while the denomination ONE SOVEREIGN is inscribed in the lower field below the wreath. The design is framed by a beaded border and reflects the distinctive typology created for the newly established Sydney Mint, emphasising Australia's colonial identity as an issuing authority.
