These small-denomination notes were produced specifically for use along the Hồ Chí Minh Trail supply corridor, issued to North Vietnamese Army troops and Viet Cong logistics personnel operating in Laos and Cambodia — territories where ordinary DRV currency had no practical backing. The second issue followed the first after complaints about durability under jungle conditions, though the paper composition remained essentially unchanged.
Because they circulated in a war zone and were frequently damaged by humidity, river crossings, and rough handling, survivors in any reasonable condition are genuinely uncommon. Many were deliberately destroyed by soldiers to avoid identification if captured.
