The Banque des États de l'Afrique Centrale — the BEAC — issues a single currency shared across six central African states: Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon. The suffix letter on BEAC notes identifies the issuing member state; "L" designates Gabon. Notes of identical design were therefore issued simultaneously under different suffixes, each valid only within its designated territory — a constraint that created persistent informal cross-border circulation problems throughout the franc zone.
The Banque de France facility at Chamalières has handled BEAC production for decades, giving these notes a printing quality noticeably higher than many regional contemporaries.
