The Battle of Lake Maracaibo in July 1823 was the decisive naval engagement that effectively ended Spanish rule on the South American continent. Colombian republican forces under Admiral José Prudencio Padilla overwhelmed a Spanish squadron despite being outgunned, severing Spain's last viable military foothold in the region. Venezuela's subsequent independence was sealed not by a land campaign but by that single afternoon on the lake.
This 2023 issue marks the bicentennial of that battle.
