| Reverse description | Three Siberian tigers (Panthera tigris altaica) are depicted in high relief against a mirror-polished field: a large adult tiger is shown in the upper portion in silver relief against a darkened background, while two cubs in the foreground are rendered in vivid polychrome enamel colour, their orange and black striped coats contrasting dramatically with the reflective silver field. The composition conveys a naturalistic scene of the endangered subspecies in a wildlife setting. The Latin species name 'PANTHERA TIGRIS ALTAICA' is inscribed in gold-coloured letters along the right rim, and the date '1996' appears in the lower exergue. |

Mongolia's 1996 kilogram silver series drew on the Chinese lunar calendar as a vehicle for large-format bullion issues aimed squarely at the collector market. The Tiger year fell in 1998 by that calendar — the 1996 dating here reflects the issue year rather than the zodiac year celebrated, a discrepancy that occasionally confuses attribution.
KM#143 is among the heavier single coins produced by any former Soviet-bloc issuer during the 1990s bullion boom.
