| Obverse description | A defiant condor with wings spread stands in left profile atop a rocky outcrop, rendered in fine relief in the style of engraver Louis-Oscar Roty. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE CHILE arcs around the upper field, separated from the design by a beaded border. The fineness mark '0.5.' appears in the lower left field below the condor's perch. The designer's signature 'O. Roty' is inscribed discreetly near the base of the rock. |

Chile's shift to .500 fineness on this denomination was a direct consequence of silver's declining international price in the 1890s, which made the earlier .900 fine coinage worth melting the moment silver spiked. The ".5" counterstamp — or in this case, the incorporated obverse marking — served as a statutory declaration of the new standard rather than a revaluation of older pieces. Casa de Moneda de Santiago carried the series through to 1907, when further monetary reforms under the Conversion Law effectively restructured the Chilean peso's relationship to gold.
