Obverse description The obverse features the Guatemalan national coat of arms at center, depicting a quetzal bird perched atop a scroll inscribed with the independence date LIBERTAD 15 DE SEPTIEMBRE DE 1821, flanked by crossed rifles and swords below and framed by laurel branches on either side. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE GUATEMALA runs along the upper periphery, with the date of issue appearing at the bottom of the field. A beaded border encircles the entire design. The composition is rendered in fine relief with crisp, detailed engraving consistent with modern milled coinage.

Additional information

Guatemala's shift to nickel brass for this denomination coincided with a period of severe political instability — the country cycled through military governments and a brutal civil conflict that would not formally end until the 1996 peace accords. The long production window of over three decades reflects monetary inertia rather than stability; the design and composition persisted largely because larger economic crises demanded attention elsewhere.

KM#277 is distinguished from its magnetic successor by composition alone — a distinction that matters to type collectors but rarely surfaces in general circulation sorting.
