The 1860 Cambodian essai coinage was produced in Paris as part of a broader French effort to establish a standardized monetary system in the region ahead of the formal protectorate declared in 1863. Norodom I had only recently consolidated his throne following a succession dispute, and France moved quickly to cultivate his dependence — issuing pattern pieces like this one was as much a diplomatic gesture as a monetary exercise.
The X# classification confirms this piece never entered circulation. Mazard's documentation of it as 505 remains the primary reference for collectors working this series.
