These coins were issued as Peru dismantled the sol de oro system and introduced the inti in 1985 — a redenomination at 1,000 to 1 as the country struggled under inflation that would only accelerate catastrophically through the late 1980s. The inti itself lasted barely six years before hyperinflation rendered the entire series worthless, eventually requiring another redenomination into the nuevo sol in 1991.
