La Guixolense was a workers' cooperative in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, on the Costa Brava, and like hundreds of similar organizations across Catalonia it began issuing its own fractional currency in the summer of 1936 after the military uprising collapsed the normal supply of small coin almost overnight. The Republican government's inability to maintain circulating coinage in the early months of the Civil War pushed this responsibility — practically and legally — down to municipalities, unions, and cooperatives at the local level.
At 53 × 35 mm this is among the smallest paper issues of the entire Catalan emergency currency wave. The paper itself was often thin and poorly stored, and survival rates for cooperative-issued notes from this region are low relative to municipally-backed equivalents.
