Script money issued by U.S. military messes in Korea served a straightforward purpose: keeping American currency out of the Korean black market during the occupation and war years. The Pusan NCO Open Mess tokens in paper form circulated only within the mess facility itself, redeemable for food and drink by non-commissioned officers — not transferable, not convertible, and theoretically worthless outside the building.

The perforation as the sole security feature is telling. These weren't designed to resist sophisticated forgery — the threat was opportunistic diversion, not counterfeiting.
