The National Bank of Vietnam — the southern Republic's central bank, established in 1955 — contracted American printers for much of its early currency production, a practical consequence of U.S. financial involvement in the Saigon government. Security Banknote Company of Philadelphia handled several denominations in this period, though attribution for some values in the series remains uncertain enough that catalog editors have flagged the printer with a query.

By 1962 the insurgency in the south was escalating sharply, and inflationary pressure on the đồng was already building — this denomination would be dwarfed within a decade by notes in the thousands.
