Additional information

The Gambia gained independence from Britain in February 1965, but the first decade of nationhood was financially precarious — the country had almost no mineral resources and an economy dependent almost entirely on groundnut exports. This 1975 issue marks the tenth anniversary of independence, struck in .500 silver at a time when the government was actively cultivating collector markets to generate hard currency income.

The Franklin Mint produced a substantial share of Gambian commemoratives during this period under contract arrangements common to small anglophone nations in the 1970s.
