Additional information

Montserrat's national bird, the oriole (Icterus oberi), exists nowhere else on earth and was pushed to the edge of extinction by the 1995 eruption of the Soufrière Hills volcano, which buried the southern half of the island under pyroclastic flows and ash and forced the evacuation of Plymouth, the capital, permanently. The population dropped below 200 individuals at its lowest point. Recovery efforts have since stabilized numbers, but the species remains critically range-restricted — the entire wild population confined to the Centre Hills.

The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank issues these collector-targeted gold pieces under individual island mandates, with Montserrat's allocation among the smallest in the series.
