| Additional information |
Namibia gained independence from South Africa on March 21, 1990, ending a 75-year administration that had begun under German colonial rule and persisted illegally for decades after the UN revoked South Africa's mandate in 1966. The Bank of Namibia itself was established only in 1990, making commemorative silver issues from the mid-1990s among the earliest numismatic output of an entirely new central banking institution.
