Sears Canada gift certificates from this period occupy an odd corner of notaphily — they are not banknotes, not scrip in any monetary-policy sense, but they do constitute a documented form of private retail currency redeemable within a specific commercial network. Sears Canada Inc. operated independently of its American parent after Simpsons-Sears was rebranded in 1984, and the gift certificate program was a significant liability instrument on the company's books.
Sears Canada declared insolvency in 2017, leaving unredeemed certificates worthless. That backstory gives surviving examples their only real collector interest.
