Nauru's late-2000s commemorative program produced a run of small-format gold pieces tied to corporate and automotive subjects, targeting the collector novelty market rather than any domestic monetary need. The Volkswagen issue is part of that series. Nauru had no meaningful gold mining or refining industry — these were essentially licensed bullion novelties, produced by European private mints and backdated or themed for maximum retail appeal.
