The National Bank of Greece turned to the American Bank Note Company for this series at a time when no domestic printing infrastructure could meet the security standards required for fiduciary currency. ABNC dominated Greek note production through much of the nineteenth century, and the relationship was not merely practical — Greek authorities had been impressed by ABNC's anti-counterfeiting intaglio work, which was then unmatched in Europe for fine-line precision.
The date range spans six years, suggesting a single print run issued progressively rather than multiple distinct printings — though surviving records do not definitively confirm how many impressions were ordered or whether plate revisions occurred mid-series.
