Obverse description A full-length figure of a Swiss Reisläufer (medieval mercenary soldier) in Renaissance costume is depicted in dynamic pose at center, striding forward while brandishing a large billowing battle flag bearing the Swiss cross above his head. The date 1956 is inscribed in two lines to the left of the figure, and the engraver's monogram (WG for Werner Graul) appears to the lower right. The circumferential Latin legend HELVETIA VETERRIMA RES PUBLICA curves along the lower portion of the field, executed in bold serif lettering.
