Additional information

Crete's autonomous status under Ottoman suzerainty ended in 1913 when the island formally united with Greece following the First Balkan War — the culmination of decades of revolts, massacres, and Great Power interventions that had kept the island in a state of suspended sovereignty since 1898. This issue commemorates the centenary-plus-eight of that union, a delay likely attributable to the Greek debt crisis years, which severely curtailed the Bank of Greece's commemorative minting program through the mid-2010s.
