Issued to mark the bicentennial of the Greek War of Independence, which began in 1821 when Greek revolutionaries rose against four centuries of Ottoman rule. The First Greek State — formally the Third National Assembly's creation of a governing republic under Ioannis Kapodistrias in 1827 — lasted only until his assassination in 1831, leaving a political vacuum that ultimately brought the Bavarian prince Otto to the throne.
