Greece hosted the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens in 2011 — the first time the Games had returned to Europe since Dublin in 2003, and the first time Athens had hosted them. The organizing effort carried particular weight given Greece's ongoing sovereign debt crisis; the government pressed ahead with the commemorative program despite severe austerity measures already cutting deeply into public spending.
