Francisco de Saavedra y Sangronis served as Spain's Finance Minister during one of the country's most financially catastrophic periods — the late 1790s, when war with Britain had severed colonial trade routes and the treasury was haemorrhaging silver. He briefly held the position of Prime Minister in 1798 before illness forced his removal. His connection to American silver makes him an appropriate, if somewhat obscure, choice for a bullion-adjacent commemorative.
