| Obverse description | Left-facing effigy of Marianne, the female personification of the French Republic, wearing a winged Phrygian cap rendered with the French tricolor. The legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE arcs along the upper rim, with the engraver's signature L. BAZOR and the date 1953 positioned below the bust. Cargo ships appear in the background field behind the figure, evoking maritime and colonial trade. The mintmaster's privy mark accompanies the date in the lower exergual area. On certain Essai pieces, the word ESSAI appears vertically in the field, both behind the head and before the word FRANÇAISE. |
