The Territoire Français des Afars et des Issas was the renamed form of French Somaliland after 1967, a rebranding forced by a deeply contested referendum on independence that France managed carefully — and controversially — to produce a pro-continuity result. Essai pieces from this territory are pattern strikes produced for official approval and collector distribution through Paris, never intended for circulation. Surviving quantities are small, as was typical of French colonial essai production runs of this period.
