| Obverse description | Right-facing bare-headed effigy of President Léon Mba occupies the central field, rendered in high relief with fine portrait detail. The circumferential legend is divided into two arcs: 'PRESIDENT LEON MBA' runs along the upper border and 'REPUBLIQUE GABONAISE' along the lower, both separated by small star ornaments at the sides. The date '1960' appears in the lower field beneath the portrait truncation. |

Gabon's independence from France was proclaimed on August 17, 1960, and this gold issue was among the first sovereign coinages struck for the new republic. France's CFA franc zone meant Gabon retained the franc as its currency unit, so this piece occupies an unusual position — a gold commemorative that asserts nationhood while remaining tethered to the monetary framework of the former colonial power.
Struck at the Paris Mint, as were virtually all early Francophone African issues of this period.
