Rwanda's first gold coinage was issued the year the country held its inaugural presidential election under the 1962 constitution — a consolidation of Kayibanda's Parmehutu-led government following independence from Belgian trusteeship. The pieces were struck in limited quantities, almost certainly intended for diplomatic presentation and collector sale rather than any practical monetary function; the newly independent state had neither the gold reserves nor the infrastructure to support circulating gold coinage.
Kayibanda was overthrown in a military coup by Juvénal Habyarimana in July 1973, making the entire 1965 gold series a numismatic footnote to a government that lasted just over a decade.
