Grace Kelly died on September 14, 1982, following a stroke suffered while driving on the Corniche road above Monaco. This trial piece was produced that same year, almost certainly in response to her death — a mourning issue conceived before a final circulating design was approved. The essai designation reflects its status as a pattern submitted for official review rather than a coin struck for release.
The Gadoury reference MC158 places it firmly within Monaco's essai series, where such pieces were routinely struck in small quantities for ministerial approval.
